Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with development or functioning. ADHD is associated with reduced academic and occupational performance, social rejection, and elevated interpersonal conflict.
Individuals with untreated ADHD are at higher risk for the development of substance use disorders, incarceration, unemployment, accidental injuries, and traffic accidents. 11.4% of children ages 3-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD and a substantial portion of children diagnosed will remain relatively impaired into adulthood.
Treatments for ADHD are highly effective and include medications, psychotherapy, educational and occupational interventions, and behavioral therapies.
